Origins Season 2 (Continued.... Eventually)

Well, I'm REALLY behind on this one.,...!

I will of course be making it up with the posting of two new Origins episodes in the very very near future, real life caught up with me yet again and floored me when I wasn't really paying attention. I'm getting back in the saddle now, and hopefully will be able to bring everyone another installment or three shortly.

Alongside this, I have noticed that the Origins website doesn't update properly either. So I'm looking into fixing that at present and am still soldiering through the Wiki entries as fast as I am able - Given that I can't look at a computer screen for more then fifteen minutes at a time without getting the sort of headache that usually reserves itself for time-travel paradox theory, this may take some time!!! - (Although up until a couple of weeks ago, I couldn't do a screen at all and was relying on the low-res TV upstairs to do anything computer related!).

I have another iron in the pot so to speak too - and hopefully will be unveiling it in the very near future - although the body hasn;t been willing lately, the mind is certainly feverishly at work and just as sick and twisted as ever!!! :D

Remarkable writing, especially under pesky real conditions.
The story reminded me of searching for the pet exercise disk you requested a while ago [exact time I can't recall] requesting help in locating a 'pet exercise disk'.
Many aspects of your story followed searching for a 'pet exercise disk'.
Permutation searches on 'pet exercise disk' went nowhere like such an item did not exist; I then searched 'how to install a pet exercise disk'. Bingo, it revealed the desired results.
A paradox knowing one may find directions how install an item that you couldn't find previously.
The Fix Or Repair Daily [FORD] strings really connected :D

I'm having some trouble with the Origins website. The links to the stories don't seem to be working past 2.6 - They Came From Beneath. I have a few to catch up on before I read this newest one...

Oops... yeah, that's what I meant by the site isn't updating properly B-guy. pesky thing keeps reloading an old version of the site and insisting that's the most current one available!

Here are the links to 2.7 - 2.9 for your info... normal site updates to be resumed soon!

http://www.freewebs.com/traks-origins/s2/2.7Day.txt 2.7 The day of free love
http://www.freewebs.com/traks-origins/s2/2.8Gorn.txt 2.8 Here today Gorn tomorrow
http://www.freewebs.com/traks-origins/s2/2.9Bacon.txt 2.9 Let that be your last bacon sandwich

These are the stories with broken links on the site - for some reason the site even had their old working titles instead of the proper episode titles! - Will fix that ASAP!

Thanks muchly! :D

Heh...Chibbles...
Sorry, little tired. That was...very different. It was fun, quirky and mildly disturbing, all trademarks of good Traks writing. My only problem is I can't help envisioning the Dad Rock Monster from The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything movie crossed with a Hunter from Halo as the stone creature, especially when the creature jumps off the cliff... all I can think of is when Dad Rock in Pirates does a cannon-ball to get the boat through the Clapping Pass!
That aside, I wonder, if the Chibbles run out of food (as seems likely), what will they eat next? Each other? *shudder* Cannibal Chibbles... Hm, wait, that planet is near the Klingon Empire... I'm looking for a way to incorporate Chibbles into Governor's Song (yes, still working on that. Been distracted lately. That's what happens when your friend comes home from the Nat'l Guard with literally a foot-locker full of gamesand movies...) and this might be the hook I need. Thanks, man, you helped me when you didn't even realize I needed it.

Ha! Before I could fall too behind I have caught up again! If only I could say the same for my writing.

Anyhooooo...

I always appreciate deep character studies such as this one that really dig into the psyche of... Who am I kidding? This was an old-fashioned romp chock full of the chaos, wanton destruction, and terrible maiming that our esteemed Mad Lensman so lives to dish out. I particularly liked the abrupt and very TOS way you dealt with the two redshirts on the planet. Pronk's solution to the carnivorous plant issue was also a nice touch.

I did have one question. When the landing party was beamed down in a stunned state along with the chibbles and everything else, why weren't the immediately nibbled on, or, if the chibbles were stunned as well, why did they end up so far away from the Devonshire officers? Yes, I know. I'm nitpicking again.

Nice to see you back on ye olde writing horse, Mad. Hopefully we'll all be able to be a bit more productive in the last third of this year.

Alan

How the landing party and the Chibbles ended up so far apart is easy; the transporter systems were already overloading so the emitters could have suffered glitches and somehow rematerialized both groups away from each other. I'm sure there's some kind of crystal or lens or other fragile plot device in the system that could have fractured, warped or otherwise been damaged to cause the matter stream to split.
If that is the case, the landing party is damned lucky they all materialized in one ... well, with all their individual pieces intact. If they'd materialized all in one piece, they'd have more immediate concerns than Chibbles and carni-flora to worry about!

The reasoning on both the points Alan brought up is thus:

1) The clearing the landing party arrived in was the home of the rock monster - ergo, plants not wishing to be eaten or trampled to death were well advised to keep their distance. (I envisaged this particular beast as a sort of lobotomised cousin of the rock beast in Galaxy Quest and the crab thing, well, I'd just gotten back from a night's painful and cold fishing, and having lost a reel to a particularly large and nasty hermit crab, I felt a little revenge was on the cards.....)

2) The chibbles, having survived their trip through the transporter, immediately sensed that something wrong, bigger and hungrier than they were had made a home in the clearing and legged it before they became lunch. Unfortunately, they also became lunched on when they hit the forest so it just proves the average tribble/chinchilla and their new hybrid species aren't very high on the intelligence ladder.... (But even they ran away from the BIG monster, which proves they are marginally more intelligent than the landing party...? )

BC Glad to be of service.....! :D Why not turn the planet into some kind of Klingon vacation spot where they can hunt Chibbles till their hearts content? Thus keeping the chibble population in check and ensuring a natural <shudder> balance. Just ensure you keep the main chibble colony alive, or Mrs. Lensman will batter me to within an inch of my life - She must take the credit for creating the things...... <Honestly she did>! :D

BTW Alan, you're only caught up until Sunday - 2.11 posting then. :P

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is the further proof of one of the wonderful things about Trek fans. Sure, we may nitpick things to death, but we can also come up with a reasonable explanation for just about anything.

Not to derail the thread too much, but I've been thinking about this "reasonable explanation" issue in regard to something in The Empire Strikes Back. Anikan "Darthy-poo" Vader nee Skywalker is a, and I'm understating things a bit, rather experienced Force user. In Empire alone we see him throwing heaving crates across the room and ripping conduit and such off the wall with his Force powers. Go back to the prequels and the Clone Wars series, and the guy can do pretty much anything he wants.

So, he's got Luke backed up onto that pole/platform/antenna thing dangling out over the interior of Cloud City. They have their family bonding moment, and then Luke decides, rather than going home with Dad, he's going to leap to what he possibly believes will be his death. Luke plummets, cheesy scream is or is not heard depending on which edition of the film you're watching, and he sails sideways into a conveniently placed...um...whatever the hell that tunnel was supposed to be (trash chute? air duct? drain to empty the water after they fill in the interior for Beach Blanket Bespin Night? I have no clue.). The question I have, almost thirty years after the fact, is why didn't Vader just Force grab Luke to prevent him from falling? I really need to go back and watch the scene again. It's been a few years since I last watched Empire, but I'm pretty sure Vader just stands there while Luke drops.

Ignoring the real world reasons (Lucas hadn't given the Jedi and Sith those kinds of powers yet, Luke needs to get away for the plot to continue, and that's what the script said), here are some possible in-story explanations I have come up with:

1) Tired from the lightsaber battle
2) Too busy thinking "Holy crap! I can't believe he just did that!"
3) Luke was using the Force to put out a "No, you can't grab me field." We see kind of the reverse of this in Revenge of the Sith in the Anikan/Obi-Wan duel when one of them (I think it's Anikan) tries to Force push the other and the other is able to stop it.
4) Darth decided that Luke was too resistant right now, so he lets Luke fall and is actually the one who steers Luke into the life-saving chute with the idea that he'll meet up with him at another time.
