Star Traks: Governor's Song

Post by borgcrazy »

Isn't back... Turns out using Yahoo Groups as a temp host isn't going to work, so Alan has been gracious enough to host the stories for the time being (for which I'm deeply grateful).
As soon as he gets them up, I'll make a new post.

Coming soon, new Governor's Song!

The cha'DIchtev is warping to face down a Borg cube - alone - and they fully expect to meet untimely ends either at the end of a Borg weapon or worse, assimilation tubules.
But, not all is as it seems and the crew quickly learns there are fates worse than death or assimilation... What could possibly be waiting for them? Find out in the twelfth installment of Star Traks: Governor's Song, coming soon.
Just a note of warning, there are parts of this story that are a bit more disturbing and gruesome than the normal Star Traks or GS fare. Those with weak stomachs should proceed with caution...

I'm getting 'Document Not Found'.

I'm also getting the sense that I'm gonna have to go back and refresh myself on what happened in some of the later stories...

Okay, let's try this again! Alan was gracious enough to make a page for GS at star-traks.com here. Thanks a million, Alan!
Oh, and the new story, Tempo Change, is already on there. I'm moving the comments to this post, just to avoid confusion.

Comments: SPOILER ALERT!! Read the story BEFORE scrolling down.

You were warned...

This one was a lot of fun, and one of the reasons it took so long to finish (besides Real Life doing its best to kick me in the teeth) is because I wanted to do it right. There were a lot of things I wanted to include in this story, and I'm sure I hit on all of them. In particular, the zombie Borg (or ZomBorg, as I've come to think of them), the scene where the zombie tries to attack it's reflection, and a Klingon's reaction to the zombie hunger for living flesh were the main points I wanted to hit on.
i was also able to use the medical nature of the zombification to highlight the differences between Dr. Ha'Satlh and the late Dr. maim. Where maim would have been more interested in adapting the virus to his own twisted purposes, Ha'Satlh wanted to research the virus in an effort to understand and defeat it.
The somewhat lengthy technobabble scene near the end in which bekk griltlh constructs the EM disruption device was a late addition; I realized during one proof-reading session that everyone tells her to skip the technobabble and just get the job done. This scene was added just so she could engage in some old-fashioned tech-speak. It's just too bad her counterparts on the other Squads weren't able to keep up...
I had hoped this story would be done by Halloween, given the nature of the plot, but I suppose there is a perverse, ironic appropriateness to posting it right before Thanksgiving. Think about it...both are glorifications of the wanton feasting of flesh...
So yea, have fun. And yes, i did scare the crap out of myself several times while writing this, in case you were wondering.

I still owe you some comments on the new story. Hopefully I'll be able to get it read this week.

Three days into my holiday, and I've already managed to get caught up on GS! I told ya! Told ya I'd do it!

Sooo, where to begin. There's been a lot of stuff happening in the last few stoies. Bought time thul was captured...that bastard's been a pain in the ass for most of the season! It was good to see the crew (I won't even try spelling the ship's name) get a few victories for once. I thought the space combat was well written and imaginitive, and throwing in the Colgate made things more interesting. I definately look forward to seeing more of them around. Dr. maim's little incident was expected, mostly because the spoiler in the previous story said he'd be trying someing, but the fact that he was killed caught me a bit off-guard. It was a very Klingon way of handling the situation. Which brings me to about the only down point I really had. It felt, in several cases, like the Klingons here were behaving a bit too...Federation-like. I would have expected them to just slaughter the Hillbillies and keep that planet for themselves. Likewise, I wouldn't have expected them to be so willing to help out the manager of the IMDB...(I might have my letters in the wrong order here).

I also could help but notice that the Tenth Squad seems to been very central to several of the storylines lately. That's not a criticism, they're a fun bunch! And I guess wip and thi...tilith...thi....the first officer guy had their time in the spotlight earlier on in the season.

The zombie borg made for an enjoyable story. I hadn't read any of the spoilers or such when I started reading it, so I had no idea where you were going with the whole borg thing, but I like the way it turned out. Resident Evil: HyperCube! Either that or "6 of 12 of the Dead". Mmmm....Simon Pegg horror movies....

Anyway, good stories. Looking forward to seeing more coming along in the future!

IMDB is right, like the movie website. I think I explained why the Klingons aren't so Klingon lately in-story, but in case I overlooked it; the colonists are moving to an unexplored region of Federation space, so they have to obey Federation rules. This extends any military escort they bring (or hire), so the cha'DIchtev has to follow Federation rules and procedures - at least when dealing with others. In other words, they have to play nice and be diplomatic. Besides, the colonists have to live with these other races eventually; having their escort starting wars every other planet wouldn't be conducive to establishing a successful colony. On the upside, their internal politics remain decidedly Klingon, though what that means for this group is slightly different than for other Defense Force crews.
Which brings me to the other side of their un-Klingon behavior: there's a reason they're the rejects of the Defense Force. These aren't battle-hardened, gung-ho Klingons eager for Sto'Vo'Kor. They're the ones who can only hope to sneak into Sto'Vo'Kor without being noticed.
The stress of playing nice against their Klingon nature will be better explored in future stories as ... well, nevermind. Let's just say their stay at the IMDB will be a bit longer than they're expecting.

It took me over a month longer than I expected, but I finally finished Tempo Change. I don't know if I've said this about you before, but for a while now I've considered you to be the Tom Clancy of our group, since you really dig into the technology and battle tactics in a way that most of us don't. This story (practically a book) just cemented that in my mind. You took the Zombie concept, which has been almost overused of late and put a great Trek universe spin on it (far better than the Zombie episode of Enterprise, in my opinion) while still keeping true to your characters and their personalities. I particularly liked your description of how Klingons think about diseases. Also the "Kahless' tooth decay!" exclamation made me laugh.

Now on to Origins!

Hah! I have finally finished reading Governor's Song to its current point. For me, that is quite an accomplishment. However, it has been a wee bit on the cold and rainy side (unusually so), which in turn alters the local roads into a consistency best described as slicker-than-ice mud. Not fun. Anyway, I do not have too much more to say other than that announcement. As mentioned by others before, I am slightly worried that the Klingons are not acting as "Klingon" as one might hope, at least towards those non-Klingon weakling races thus far encountered. However, I am also quite confident that such a facade cannot last forever.

Also, I am delighted at the disregard thus far shown towards the expendibles. And, perhaps, a few characters of the more major sort. One doesn't want the below-decks population to get too uppity!

That scares me, because I truly believe you mean it...
