The concept of [[USS Silverado|Silverado]] as an old, recommissioned vessel was actually inspired by the movie Down Periscope, in which Kelsey Grammer commands the ancient USS Stingray. The name Silverado comes from Brendan's beloved old Chevy Silverado, which he sold shortly before moving to Toronto. Upon reaching [[Starfleet Square Mall]], they see Colonel [[Martin Lazlo]] running for his life. The officers are soon spotted and taken into custody, at which point they are told that they will be taken to the Station Administrator. Little is known about what happened to Noonan over the course of the next 200 years, but he presumably spent time in and out of Starfleet.<br /> <br /> ==USS Silverado==<br /> <br /> Noonan was one of the few crew members who had actually requested a posting aboard Silverado. It was actually his fourth choice; he was unable to secure a posting aboard the [[USS Secondprize]], the [[USS Explorer]] or [[Waystation]]. As First Officer, he was an expert at working behind the scenes to keep Silverado's paperwork and administration up to date. He was also an excellent balance to Stafford's inexperience, as evidenced by his leading role in gaining revenge for the pranks performed upon Silverado crew by Foreman [[Garroth Lynch]] and the construction team working on the Silverado's refit ([[Let the Games Begin!]] [SIL]). <br /> <br /> Silverado launched soon after, and on it's shakedown cruise made it's first contact with the Matrians when one of their dream devices trapped the crew in a dream world dominated by [[Queen Wowryk]], the maniacal alter ego of the ship's doctor [[Noel Wowryk]]. Stafford immediately fell head over heels for the station commander [[Lisa Beck]], but didn't have the time to pursue her after a Klingon terrorist called [[K'Eleese]] bombed [[Waystation]] and stole a dangerous piece of [[Dillon Enterprises]] technology. Stafford and Silverado pursued [[K'Eleese]], where Stafford was knocked out in the ensuing firefight. [[K'Eleese]] was eventually captured by [[Lisa Beck|Beck]] and the stolen technology destroyed (&quot;[[Pit Stops, Pitfalls and Piracy]]&quot; [SIL]).<br /> <br /> Stafford came into contact with the [[Matrians]] once again after the Silverado was disabled by a catastrophic plumbing failure. Stafford was initially trapped in the crew lounge following the inaugarul Cartoon Night, but eventually made his way to the bridge just in time to see off a Matrian Scout ship that attempted to board the Silverado (&quot;[[Contents Under Pressure]]&quot; [SIL]). Disabled, Silverado comes under attack from two more Scout ships. Despite succesfully fighting them off the crew once again comes under the influence of a dream device, altering everyone's character. Thompson delivers Stafford with an ultimatum: He can either start shaping things up aboard ship , or he can risk having Silverado become another USS Secondprize or another USS Explorer. Stafford, of course, tells her to go to hell. Beck and Hodges recognize him as [[Banyon Kovacs]], the Starfleet Intelligence agent they'd met and whom Beck had a fling with while on leave several years earlier. <br /> <br /> <br /> That night, Kovacs comes to visit Beck in her quarters. He explains that he's on assignment and that he's pretending to love Dekelina, but he can't tell Beck any more than that. Feeling an anger that she can't even explain, Beck throws him out. The next morning at the Beanus Coffee Hut, Hodges tells her that the anger probably came out of fear of getting close to Kovacs and getting hurt like she did when her relationship with [[Phillip Harper]] disintegrated. In the food court, Kovacs is distracted and, when Dekelina asks him about how he is feeling, he claims to be tired. She sends him back to their ship to rest. Both people have ulterior motives, though. As Kovacs rushes to catch up with Beck, Dekelina turns to her manservant, Mr. Lerk, for information on the whereabouts of Lieutenant Commander [[Sean Russell]]. She still wants revenge against him for his arrest of [[Olivia Russell]]. After learning of Lerk that Russell would be visiting a holodeck that evening, Dekelina orders him to follow Kovacs. Kovacs has a conversation with Beck and tells her he wants to see her when his assignment is over. She is non-committal. While Lerk cannot hear what is said between Beck and Kovacs, when he reports to Dekelina that the conversation took place, she is convinced that Kovacs is cheating on her. She pumps anesthezine into his quarters on her ship, rendering him unconscious.<br /> <br /> <br /> Colonel Lazlo tells his troops that they need to start behaving like marines on and off duty, implying heavily that they should be spending their off hours on the marine deck of the station. They don't get the message. Lieutenant Colonel [[Daniel O'Neal]], for example, is spending the evening in the holodeck with Russell playing extreme croquet. Their game is interrupted by the arrival of Dekelina and Lerk with a bound and unconscious Banyon Kovacs. Russell realizes that Dekelina must be the person who tried to kill him several months earlier just after the opening of Waypoint Harbor. Dekelina demands that Russell get Beck into the holodeck as well, forcing him to comm her. Beck arrives at the holodeck to find Dekelina and Lerk waiting for her. They've also made a few modifications to Russell's program. Beck, Kovacs, Russell, and O'Neal are bound to giant croquet hoops, where they are to be smashed by the arrival of equally massive croquet balls. <br /> <br /> <br /> Dekelina's death trap is interrupted by the entrance of a furious Colonel Lazlo, who is looking for O'Neal to join his basketball game. O'Neal shouts a warning to Lazlo, who springs into action and quickly takes out Dekelina and Lerk before shutting down the holodeck program. Dekelina and Lerk are arrested, and Beck and Kovacs rekindle their fling.<br /> <br /> <br /> While all of this is happening, [[Bradley Dillon]] is trying to find a way to counter [[Kathryn Janeway]]'s lead in the polls. At one point he asks Beck why the public seems to prefer Janeway. Not in the best mood at that moment, Beck shoots back that it's because people know Bradley. Bradley, however, realizes that Beck is exactly right. While the public is familiar with Janeway's accomplishments in general, they do not know her. He decides to change that, but first, he has to get to know her. To that end, Bradley travels to the Royal Opera House on Caltor Prime, where he arranges to &quot;accidentally&quot; meet the Emergency Medical Hologram from Janeway's former ship, the USS Voyager, and strikes up a friendship with him based on their mutual interest in culture. He did a great job with it, but then he left Dekelina on the loose! Originally I asked him to rewrite the ending of his story to have her captured, but then the idea for this story started forming (unfortunately, he'd already made the changes by the time I got around to telling him not to bother). One of the wonderful things about there being other Traks writers is that we all get to play off of things that other people create. In this instance, I was able to make use of some of what Brendan created for his story. <br /> <br /> Backing up a little bit, what really got the proverbial ball rolling for me on this one was the idea of bringing back Banyon Kovacs, who was in one story way back in Renovations. Admittedly, that's stretching pretty far into continuity, but he fit really well into what I wanted to do here, which was put a little romance back in Beck's life. <br /> <br /> I also got to do a ridiculously over-the-top death trap along the line of something out of the Adam West &quot;Batman&quot; series. Since Waystation has several docking bays, Beck has Jones get in touch with the group's leader, [[Claurice Thenian]]. After checking out one of Waystation's docking bays, Claurice decides that the space will be acceptable for the yacht club, saving the station from the threat of the retirement community.<br /> <br /> <br /> Two days later, plans for the yacht club, to be called [[Waypoint Harbor Yacht Club|Waypoint Harbor]], are in full swing. Elsewhere, word of the project reaches a mysterious woman who has designs for revenge against an unnamed man. She orders her lackey, Lerk, to arrange for a berth for her yacht at Waypoint Harbor.<br /> <br /> <br /> Two weeks later, Waypoint Harbor is open and receiving a flood of yachts. Lieutenant Commander [[Sean Russell]] meets and is immediately attracted to Claurice's daughter, Debora. Russell takes her to the Beanus Coffee Hut for coffee, where they are approached by a representative of Ms. [[Lusenkia Dekelina]], the head of the Velvane Corporation, who invites Debora and Russell to lunch of Dekelina's yacht at Waypoint Harbor. In the middle of said lunch, Russell is suddenly taken away by a transporter beam. He finds himself in a small, dimly-lit room about the size of a closet. He's actually been beamed inside another ship owned by Dekelina that is docked at the Harbor. Dekelina is very unhappy that Russell caused her friend and mentee, [[Olivia Russell]], to end up in a rehabilitation colony. She does not reveal her identity to Russell, though, and instead taunts Russell through a voice changer as the ceiling of the little room he's in slowly descends. Porter realizes that he's seen one of the Harbor ships before and that it's the Ozymandias, a ship that tried Olivia Russell tried to escape to just over a year earlier. Porter and Beck get into the ship and find that it only hold Russell and an over-elaborate death trap. Her crew is still working on that, but are now aided by Sylvia, an artificial intelligence created accidentally when alien technology messed up a computer program that was imitating the Captain's mother...<br /> <br /> == Capabilities ==<br /> <br /> Silverado is an Ambassador-class ship, approximately 525 meters long with 36 decks and a crew of about 600 (plus families and mission specialists). The Ambassador-class was designed in the early 24th century to be used as front line exploratory vessels. Ambassador-class ships were the pride of the fleet until they were replaced by the Galaxy-class ships like the Enterprise 1701-D in The Next Generation. (The Galaxy-class was later replaced by Sovereign-class ships like the Enterprise 1701-E in First Contact)<br /> <br /> During the refit meant to bring her up to current standards, Silverado was outfit with a variety of technologies that had not been available during her original construction. Due to the quarantine, a Ferengi visits Yeoman [[Tina Jones]] in the Waystation Welcome Center to request quarters for him and his pet, a creature about the size of a softball and covered in soft, downy fur with a squirrel-like face. With Jones distracted, the Ferengi disappears into the crowded mall concourse, leaving the creature behind.<br /> <br /> <br /> When Jones tries to give it to Lieutenant Commander [[Sean Russell]], the creature, called a snigglesnoosh, escapes into the station's maintenance crawlways. The snigglesnoosh feeds on energy and attaches itself to a power transfer conduit, at which point it begins growing and producing offspring.<br /> <br /> <br /> The crew detects the power drain and quickly discovers the snigglesnoosh and the loads of offspring it is producing. Frequoq Wuddle arrives and beams aboard inside a transparent aluminum enclosure to maintain the quarantine. He explains that the snigglssnooshes will keep breeding and tells Captain Beck that they must be destroyed. There's one small problem: when shot with a phaser, the snigglesnooshes explode violently. As the crew begin trying to beam the creatures off of the station, [[Ih'mad]] and [[Krilik]] take matters into their own hands and discover that blades work quite well against the furry menaces. Unfortunately, one of the snigglesnooshes reaches the upper saucer power core and latches on, which causes it to grow instantly and send out waves of new snigglesnooshes. <br /> <br /> <br /> A snigglesnoosh in Ops bites Lieutenant Commander [[Craig Porter]] and instantly dies. Porter deduces that his own bioelectric field killed it. Porter inceases the station's power output to attract every snigglesnoosh on the station, then, once they've all attached to power conduits and such, he alters the energy output to mimic his bioelectric field. The snigglesnooshes are all killed. This story marks the first Silverado story where the shuttlecraft are used as fighter craft. (Thought it's been done in other series before.) After the ships are destroyed, people start acting very strangely. Burke gives Fifebee life advice, right before turning into a crazy French guy. Day breaks into song, T'Parief gets frisky, Yanick starts a stuffed animal tea party and Stafford chases after Wowryk. Oh, and Fifebee? The dozens of personality profiles in her program escape and run amok around the ship. Help comes from an unexpected quarter when it turns out that one of her personality profiles is none other than [[Jaroch]], Captain of the [[USS Secondprize]]. With his help, Fifebee is able to track down the source of the problem, which turns out to be a malfunctioning [[Dream Machine]] on one of the alien ships. Stafford is immediately knocked head over heels for [[Lisa Beck|Captain Beck]], however his cheap attempt to romance her over a dinner briefing are cut short when Waystation is bombed by [[K'Eleese]]. K'Eleese escapes with a dangerous piece of [[Dillon Enterprises]] technology. While Stafford and Beck chase after her, [[Matthew Noonan|Noonan]] and [[Jane 5-B|Fifebee]] remain on Waystation to determine who's responsible for distributing the Dream Machines. They manage to track the shipments to a Pakled freighter, the [[Boink]].<br /> <br /> During the hunt for K'Eleese, Stafford is incapacitated, leaving Beck in command of the ship. She manages to apprehend the pirate, but Silverado is nearly disabled in the attempt. The relationships between the Waystation and Silverado crews in this story can best be described as 'strained'. Sadly, things go to hell in a hand basket when the Senousians seduce and subdue the Silverado crew and take control of the ship. (Even worse, the seductions don't involve any actual sex!) As it turns out, the Senousians are capable of using pheromones to coerce members of other species. Jall, however, is immune to the seduction efforts of the female Senousians. He's able to hide out on the ship and temporarily spring Jeffery from the brig. Together, they re-take the ship. Defeated, the Senousians reveal that they wanted Silverado to defend their planet against the [[Matrian Empire]], a nearby hostile empire. Stafford promises to return if the Matrians attack. Shortly afterwards, he decided to write a single story for the [[Alternate Traks]] page. He created characters that were mild caricatures of himself, friends from high school and co-workers. The concept of [[USS Silverado|Silverado]] as an old, recommissioned vessel was actually inspired by the movie Down Periscope, in which Kelsey Grammer commands the ancient USS Stingray. The name Silverado comes from Brendan's beloved old Chevy Silverado, which he sold shortly before moving to Toronto. The first story, [[Old Ships, New Beginnings]] was posted on February 14th, 2004.<br /> <br /> While the original plan for Star Traks: Silverado involved only one story, positive feedback from the Traks authors and from readers led to a second story, then a third.
