			When the [[USS Anomaly]] is sent to a planet in Romulan space to investigate an explosion at the Imperial Governor’s residence. The explosion turns out to be a kitchen accident, but during the investigation, Dr. [[Natalia Kasyov]] comes in contact with a highly-toxic plant. Dr. [[Fred Nooney]] puts her into a medically-induced coma and submerges her in a treatment tank to deal with the situation. Commander [[Vioxx]] tells Captain [[Reginald Bain]] that the incident is why Bain and his Starfleet crew should defer to Vioxx and his officers while in Romulan space.


			[[Cabral]] is upset about Kasyov’s injuries, but soon begins feeling a low thrum that resonates through his entire being. He is compelled to follow the thrum to find the source. He goes to Bain, who agrees to help find the source. Eventually, the Anomaly locates a Class M planet that Cabral feels is the source. It appears to be a barren world, but the readings from it are suspiciously empty. Vioxx takes an away consisting of himself, Sub-Commander [[Remax]], Lieutenant Commander [[Tovar]], and Cabral’s hovercam down in a shuttle to investigate.


			On the surface, the away team finds a black metallic sphere exactly like Cabral’s buried in the dirt. And then another. And another. And many more. Cabral has no idea why they are there. Vioxx says that he feel like he is in a graveyard, to which an unfamiliar voice replies that he is. The speaker is [[Chindela]], a [[Pliggeri]]. The Pliggeri created Cabral’s species, the [[Cerebe]]. The Cerebe are grown and then ensphered, at which point they are sent out on various tasks for their creators, such as serving on Pliggeri ships, as Cabral did, or as probes exploring the galaxy.


			Chindela transports the group into the small facility where he lives and explains that he is the lone caretaker of this world, which is known as [[Gathering Point]]. It is the final resting place of the Cerebe, but Chindela is confused as to how Cabral found it, since the spheres are not to receive the call to travel to Gathering Point until after the brain inside them expires. Cabral says that he felt a hum and that he is surprised that he never heard of Gathering Point. Chindela says that the Cerebe are not told about it, so they do not dwell on their mortality. He speaks to Cabral in an unfamiliar language, but Cabral responds reflexively. Chindela informs him that Cabral has 648 cycles left until he expires. Vioxx considers the mystery solved and orders everyone back to the ship.


			Back on the Anomaly, Remax does the conversion and calculates that Cabral has almost three years left until he expires. Bain refuses to accept it, saying that if Cabral has an expiration date, it’s because the Pliggeri put it there. He orders Remax to go through Kasyov’s research to see if anything can be done about it while Bain and Tovar take a shuttle down to talk to Chindela.


			Bain makes conversation with Chindela, asking about how long he has been on Gathering Point (a very long time), if he has always been there alone (yes), and if it gets dull (sometimes). He changes the topic to Cabral’s expiration date. Chindela says there is nothing he can do. Bain pushes back, saying that while it may be okay for Chindela to live all alone on that dustball, Cabral has friends and a life. Chindela says Bain is right, but not in the way Bain expects. He exclaims that he doesn’t want to be alone anymore and that he’s taking Cabral for himself. He grabs a weapon and a control padd, and stuns Tovar while typing in commands madly.


			On the Anomaly, Cabral is compelled to obey Chindela’s commands and phases out of the ship, descending to the planet. Vioxx, Remax, and Centurion [[Nortal]] give chase in the Raceabout [[Frinoqua]]. They land outside Chindela’s home and follow Cabral inside. Bain is trying and failing to get through to Chindela or Cabral while staying under cover to avoid being shot when Nortal charges in, drawing Chindela’s fire. Bain uses the opportunity to get Tovar out of there and hands him off to Remax before heading back into the fray. He tells Vioxx and Nortal that they’ve got to get the padd Chindela is using to control Cabral. Nortal is able to leap over Cabral’s sphere, grab the padd, and get back to Bain and Vioxx without getting shot. Bain destroys it, freeing Cabral from Chindela’s control.


			They rush out of the facility and back to the raceabout. The ground begins to rumble as the empty spheres rise up all around them. Chindela has activated them to prevent the Anomaly crew from escaping. Cabral reenters the complex to deal with Chindela while the raceabout takes off, with Bain standing at the open raceabout hatch with a compression phaser rifle to shoot any spheres coming their way.


			Chindela refuses to deactivate the spheres, and the raceabout is in danger of being destroyed. The Anomaly detects the battles and swoops in to rescue the raceabout, but there are still too many spheres for the raceabout to safely enter the docking bay.


			Cabral tells Chindela about Kasyov and his life aboard the Anomaly and says that if he stayed with Chindela, it would be as a prisoner, not because he wanted to be there. He tells Chindela that he could return to the Pliggeri homeworld, but Chindela replies that he needs to be there for the spheres in their final resting place. Cabral points out that the spheres are not resting now. The horror of what he is doing hits Chindela, and he allows Cabral to shut down the spheres and return them to the surface. Chindela apologizes and asks if there is anything he can do to make it up to Cabral. Cabral says there’s the small matter of his expiration date.


			Just as Bain is running low on power packs for his rifle, the spheres begin to fall back to Gathering Point. The raceabout lands in a docking bay as the Anomaly rises back into orbit.


			Cabral returns to the ship with his expiration date removed, and the Romulans agree not to inform their superiors about Gathering Point. Once Kasyov is out of the healing tank, she insists that Cabral tell her everything that happened while she was in the coma.
