When contact with a colony is lost, Colonel Martin Lazlo and his marines are sent in to investigate. Soon, Lazlo finds himself all alone with the lives of the colonists and his marines in his hands. Sucks to be them.
Summary
After Starfleet is unable to establish contact with the Asneris Colony despite the fact that the colony's communications array seems to be functioning normally, Colonel Martin Lazlo and his marines are sent in to check on the situation. The marines touch down in the center of the colony on a beautiful day. Everything looks fine except for the small detail that they can't find a single one of the colonists. Soon after the marines' arrival, the colony buildings themselves begin to vanish, taking whatever marines are nearby with them. The USS Mongoose also vanishes, taking Stephanie Hodges with it. At this point, Lazlo is forced to call Waystation for help. Commander Lisa Beck is none too pleased that Lazlo is in trouble again and lost her best friend in the process, but she heads out in a runabout to rescue the marines. Meanwhile, the remaining three marines try and get to the colony's spaceships. Lazlo finds himself trying to figure out what Beck would do and decides to attempt to establish contact with whatever entity might be behind events. He finds himself talking to a ball of white light. The light entity explains that the planet is his and that he didn't appreciate the colonists' or the marines' intrusion. He is intrigued, however, with the fact that Lazlo is willing to risk his life to rescue the colonists and his fellow marines despite not liking them. He challenges Lazlo to two tests to prove that the Federation understands the meaning of existing in harmony with others and the universe. If Lazlo succeeds, the entity will return everyone and allow the colony to remain on the planet.
In the first test, Lazlo is transported into a misty purple nothingness where strange objects float around him. He asks the entity for help, explaining that humans work together to solve problems, and for this test, as much as it pains him to say it, he needs Lisa Beck. Beck appears at his side, and Lazlo tells her that he needs her help to save everyone. The entity asks Lazlo to explain his choice, since he apparently doesn't like Beck. Lazlo says that despite their differences, Beck is the best person for the job. The entity instantly transports Lazlo back to the colony and tells him that he passed the tests. Lazlo is confused. The entity explains the purpose of the tests. The first test was to see if Lazlo would foolhardily attempt to pass the tests alone or seek assistance from others, since only those who know the value of working together can truly exist in harmony. Lazlo asked for help, so he passed. The second test was about who Lazlo would select to help. Would it be someone trained to follow Lazlo's every order, or would
he really try to solve the problem? Since the entity believes only the ability to work together despite differences allows beings to truly exist in harmony. Lazlo did well, the colony is saved, and best of all in Lazlo's view, the entity created a fake Beck, so the real one will never know that he needed her help.
