Maija Meneks

Our Borg Queen

In her formulative years, Maija was influenced by Monty Python’s Flying Circus, Perry Mason, and original Star Trek. This is all her mom’s fault. Why she let a 5-year-old watch Monty Python, she does not know, but that eventually led down the path of satirical (and comedic) British authors such as Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett. Perry Mason, meanwhile, went nowhere, much to her mom’s disappointment since she loves herself a good procedural or detective novel (e.g., Sue Grafton). And Star Trek? Maija really does not know where Star Trek came from. Science fiction just isn’t her mom’s “thing”. Regardless, Kirk, Spock, and the rest of the crew was the gateway drug to Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, more Star Trek, Babylon 5, as well as too many fantasy and science fiction books and series to even begin to list.

Maija has now been writing BorgSpace on and off for way too many years. She first came across Star Traks in college and became quite hooked. The Borg had always been among her favorite villains, and she thought it would be a fun challenge to write from their point of view, trying to build “likeable” characters that, nonetheless, still weren’t very nice should you meet them outside the safe confines of a fictional story. So, from that fateful contact to Alan long ago, a limited series run is, well, still running. Family and life obligations keep it from being as regular as it once was, but many stories remain to be written. Beyond that, she’s a fish biologist that gets to go outside and play with fish, snorkel rapids, and poke frogs once in a while when her computer work is mostly caught up on.
