Tovar is trapped on a Romulan ship overrun by heavily-armed Vulcans. Does he have a hope of overcoming their "Devastating Logic"?
Summary
Picking up where the last story left off, a group of twenty armed Vulcan soldiers has materialized out of the crate in the cargo bay of the Romulan Warhawk Shakalak after the crate’s transporter unit was accidentally activated by Lieutenant Commander Tovar and Audrey Bain. The Vulcan commander, Colonel Strep, quickly works out that their transporter unit was activated early but that their overall plan has not been compromised. He informs Tovar and Audrey that the Shakalak is now under Vulcan control. Audrey replies that the Romulans will resist, grabs Tovar, and beams them both out of the cargo bay to Tovar’s quarters on board the Shakalak. Audrey, who is posing as Sub-Commander Nural, the ship’s first officer, comms the bridge and informs Commander Zanex about the Vulcan troops on board.
The Romulan crew attempts to defend the vessel, but the Vulcans systematically begin stunning the Romulans and hitting them with transporter tags, allowing them to gather up the crew. Tovar recommends getting to Auxiliary Control to call for help from the USS Anomaly, which Audrey refuses to do. She wants them to handle the situation themselves and decides they should go to the bridge by way of the ship’s Jefferies tubes (Whatever the Romulan equivalent is called). Strep and the Vulcans are waiting for them and take Audrey to the cargo bay to join the rest of the Shakalak’s crew. Strep demands that Tovar help them pass through Federation space. Tovar refuses, so Strep has him taken to the brig.
Admiral Kristen Larkin informs Captain Reginald Bain that the Vulcans are gathering their ships at a planetoid just inside the Romulan empire from the Neutral Zone. Starfleet is readying their own force at Starbase 228, which Bain will command with Captain Barnum Dax acting as his second.
After a few days in the brig, Tovar is taken back to the bridge to Strep, who wants information about Earth’s defenses. Knowing that Tovar won’t provide the information willingly, Strep mind melds with him. The Vulcan is unprepared for Tovar’s past lives, who turn on the intruder. Strep retreats into himself in self-defense, sending his body into a state of catatonia while Tovar regains control of himself. He is able to get a quick message off to the Anomaly explaining the threat to Earth and providing coordinates Tovar was able to pull from Strep’s mind before Strep returns to consciousness and has Tovar taken back to the brig.
On the Anomaly, the bridge crew listens to Tovar’s message. Dr. Natalia Kasyov checks the coordinates that Tovar sent and determines, to her horror, that the Vulcans are going to her house.
