FOBBER is back, and this time they even have a plan. Even more frightening, it's actually a plan that could work. And if you don't know who FOBBER is, go back and read The Bain Of Our Existence again. Jeeze. We have to do everything around here.

Summary

The members of FOBBER are in the Pakleds’ freighter, New Ship, above Dulcolax Three, a dirt ball in the Romulan/Federation Neutral Zone that neither power has shown any interest in. Dr. Lenik tells the other members of the group that this planet will soon be the flashpoint of hostilities between the two governments. The first step in her plan is to set off an explosion on the planet. And next, they wait…

While the USS Anomaly is on a layover at Starbase 342, Cole Anfibon arrives unexpectedly to see Lieutenant Shelly Marsden. She pulls herself away from engineering tasks to go have lunch with her boyfriend. Captain Reginald Bain is summoned to a meeting with Admiral Kristen Larkin and two other members of the Starfleet brass. They tell him about the explosion on Dulcolax Three and that transmetaquantaprotophasic radiation was detected, which is banned by the treaty between the Federation and the Romulans. Starfleet is concerned that the Romulans are developing banned weapons there, so the Anomaly is being sent to investigate. Bain is to avoid hostilities with the Romulans, though.

The Anomaly leaves Starbase 342 soon thereafter. Anfibon asks to stay aboard, since he barely got to spend any time with Marsden, and Bain agrees. Marsden give Anfibon a tour of the bridge; although, Lieutenant Commander Tovar and Ensign Hector Arroyo don’t want him anywhere near their station. He also accidentally goes into Commander Prosak’s quarters, thinking they are Bain’s ready room. After he leaves, Arroyo complains about Anfibon’s presence. Prosak suddenly screams and complains of an overwhelming headache. She refuses to leave the bridge, since the ship is approaching Dulcolax Three.

On New Ship, which is cloaked, the members of FOBBER watch the Anomaly approach.

Marsden takes Anfibon to play golf in the holopods. She sets him up to play in the holopod in the quarters that used to be Prosak’s before she moved to the ready room, and she heads into her own. His first shot goes into the trees, and it takes him a while to find it. His next is better and lands thirty meters away from Marsden’s.

Dr. Natalia Kasyov detects signs of transmetaquantaprotophasic on Dulcolax Three, but she can’t determine the source. She, Cabral (using his hovercam), and a security team beam down to the surface for a closer analysis. They have to go in EVA suits, since the world doesn’t have much of an atmosphere. At the blast crater, Kasyov detects trace bits of an alloy Romulans use in their facilities, but not nearly enough to have been an entire base. She also doubts this was a test site for a secret weapon because why would the Romulans do that right next to the Federation? Also, there’s no equipment on the surface or satellites in orbit that you would have to monitor a test.

Prosak’s headache worsens just as a Romulan Warhawk approaches. Bain needs Prosak’s help in talking to the Romulans, but she races from the bridge. Bain tells Tovar to stall the Romulans and goes after Prosak.

On the planet, Cabral is having trouble maintaining control of his hovercam due to interference from the radiation. Five armed Romulans beam down.

Bain follows Prosak into an empty science lab, where he is hit in the head twice by a heavy solid object, knocking him unconscious.

Tovar answers a hail from the Romulan Commander Potluk, who accuses the Federation of setting of a transmetaquantaprotophasic weapon. He demands to send a team over to inspect the Anomaly. If they attempt to raise shields, resist, or if the Romulans find any transmetaquantaprotophasic radiation on board, Potluk will attack the Anomaly and have the away team executed. Tovar puts Potluk on hold and tries to contact Bain. When Bain doesn’t respond, Tovar has him beamed to the bridge. Four commpips materialize, but Bain is not attached to them.

Lieutenant Polnuc comms Marsden and tells her the ship is at yellow alert. She says she will be right there and ends her game with Anfibon. Leaving the holopod, she finds her quarters are completely dark, which is not how she left them. Before she can order the lights back on, she is grabbed from behind. Her attacker covers her mouth then stabs a knife into her back.
