It's crisis time for the Romulan Empire as the Vulcans make a long-awaited move. But the USS Anomaly may not be in a position to help, because there are bigger issues at hand. How much bigger? How about an insane goddess trying to destroy the Flarn Empire, deep in the Delta Quadrant? It's funny who you run into out in space, and Reginald Bain is about to find that out in "God Complex."
Summary
In the Delta Quadrant, Chancellor Lotok of the Flarn Assemblage does his daily prayers to the Flarn deity, Mega. Mega is actually Megan Hartley, formerly human and now an omnipotent being. She oversees the Flarn and collects a list of the good deeds the Flarn have done from Lotok. Much Lotok’s surprise, another humanoid appears to talk to Hartley. Before he can take any action, Lotok vanishes with a wave of the newcomer’s hand. It is Mirk, who says that it is time that he and Hartley talk and that he wants to patch things up. He wants her to return to the Bermuda Expanse and stop meddling in the development of Flarn society. She sends him away with a flick of her wrist, and then an earthquake begins.
On the USS Anomaly, Commander Vioxx informs Commander Prosak that he will be taking over her quarters (formerly the ready room right off the bridge) as his office. Lieutenant Commander Tovar chases after Lieutenant Jamie Torgerson after she finds out about Lieutenant Shelly Marsden’s feelings for Tovar and their make-out session in the Jefferies tubes. Prosak tells Captain Reginald Bain and Vioxx that she can no longer reach anyone in the Romulan Empire. Bain is about to send a team down to Reno to get some answers when the Anomaly receives a comm from Admiral Kristen Larkin. She tells Bain that Starfleet has received a distress call from the Flarn and fills him in on the situation with Hartley and Mirk. Since the Anomaly is the only ship that can reach the Flarn homeworld in a reasonable time to help with the tectonic instability the planet is now experiencing, she orders Bain to go and will have Captain Pratello Maddox and his ship, the USS Carpathia, investigate the Romulan situation.
Tovar talks to Jamie Torgerson, and she tells him that she loves him. She asks if he feels the same way about her, but before he can respond, Bain summons him to his Captain’s Lounge. Bain tells Tovar and Marsden that he wants Marsden to see if she can find a way to deal with the tectonic stresses while he and Tovar try to talk to Hartley. Not wanting to deal with another romantic crisis, Tovar says it’s impossible and flees the room. Bain tries to talk to Tovar about it in the ship’s pub but doesn’t help.
Two days later, the Anomaly arrives at the Flarn homeworld, which is being ravaged by seismic activity. Bain, Tovar, and Marsden beam down to talk to Hartley. She says that she’s destroying Flarn civilization but she just can’t bring herself to do it all at once because she’s grown attached to them. When Tovar asks why she is doing it at all, she replies that she is pissed off then sends Tovar flying into a wall. Hartley says if Mirk will grant her a divorce, she’ll leave the Flarn alone. Marsden says that Hartley won’t be happy until Mirk faces up to his actions and talks things out with her. Hartley says that Marsden understands her then whispers to Marsden that Marsden is starting to love Tovar but that he’s confused and not ready for Marsden yet. She continues that Mirk spends all his time on Malox pretending to be mortal because he’s tired of spending eternity with her.
Marsden goes to Bain and Tovar and tells Bain to go to Malox and find Mirk while Hartley and Marsden have a talk with Tovar. Hartley insists that Tovar break up with Torgerson to be with Marsden, which is not what Marsden had in mind for the conversation at all. Tovar says that under different circumstances, he thinks they could be together. Marsden is sick of chasing after him and tells him to do what he wants. She’ll be fine either way.
With that settled, Hartley transports Bain, Vioxx, and Mirk directly to their location. Mirk smiles and says that his wife is ready to talk to him. She says she knows she was supposed to wait but just couldn’t and grabs him into a kiss. Vioxx demands an explanation, and Tovar says that they all must be playing parts in Hartley and Mirk’s fantasy to spice of their marriage. Hartley explains that they invent an argument every once in a while to keep things interesting. She restores to Flarn homeworld to its previous condition and promises that they won’t cause any trouble for another couple of generations. She tells the Anomaly officers to be good to each other and vanishes with Mirk. Lotok reappears wanting to know where Mega is. Bain tells him that Mega is gone and that the Flarn have the right of self-determination. The Anomaly officers beam away, and Lotok decides to return the Flarn to their previous ways.
Tovar decides to break up with Torgerson, but before he can do anything, Bain summons him to the bridge. Once there, Bain informs him that they’ve received word from the Carpathia. A Vulcan fleet has entered the Federation/Romulan neutral zone and cut off the Empire from the rest of the galaxy. No one is allowed in or out. The Anomaly is going to join a Federation task force to try to stop the Vulcans before the move on Romulus itself.
